About the project:
The project focuses on the foundations of a science for sustainable development from an interdisciplinary perspective that combines approaches from digital and computational history/history of science, media studies, complexity theory, transdisciplinary research development, and sustainability science. It starts from an evaluation and critique of the ideal of control and asks to what extent it guides ideas about sustainable development.The project’s goal is to further develop the methodological and epistemological foundations for transdisciplinary sustainability science.

About the job – PostDoc 2: “Methodological foundations of transdisciplinary sustainability science”:
This position focuses on the methodological reconfiguration of transdisciplinary sustainability science. Transdisciplinary research practices and their role in establishing the emerging field of sustainability science will be explored as part of this position. A particular focus will be on differences of discourse on transdisciplinarity and according practices with regards to world regions and scientific communities operating with the concept of transdisciplinarity and related research modes. These include the conceptualizations of research and criteria for evaluating and integrating different ways of knowing, acting and being in transdisciplinary research practices for sustainability. Tasks of this position are partially pre-defined by former analysis and activities of the CCP consortium and include, among others, the co-edition of an international book on transdisciplinarity as well as analysis of the integration of societal goals and values into the fabric of established scientific methods for qualitative empirical research.
You will be expected to work closely with one of the Principal Investigators, a PostDoc holding the position of “Knowledge and media history of complexity in sustainability” and a PhD holding the position of “Modes and potentials of sustainability science for societal transformation”
Tasks and responsibilities include:
1) independent research in the field of methodology of transdisciplinary sustainability science with a focus on methods for qualitative empirical research; 2) editorial tasks for a volume on transdisciplinarity (as a follow up from a large international conference); 3) realize computational methods based analysis concerning epistemological and methodological characteristics of transdisciplinary sustainability science in collaboration with the team and experts in computational analysis/big-data; 4) attending joint research workshops with the PhDs, PIs and the PostDoc (monthly); 6) coordinate research and outreach activities, in particular the final conference of the project; 7) taking responsibility for project reports.
Essential selection criteria are: a) PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in one of the following fields (e.g. philosophy/theory of science, sociology, sustainability science, social ecology, transdisciplinarity or any relevant field of science); b) excellent knowledge of the emerging field of transdisciplinarity and sustainability science c) highly developed conceptual skills; d) publishing experiences; e) excellent written and oral communication skills (English); f) willingness to engage with big-data computational analysis and (qualitative) discourse analysis. Additional desirable selection criteria are: a) practical experience in transdisciplinary sustainability science/ research at the science society interface; b) experience with a wide range of qualitative methods.
