Learning by one’s own field of work

During five days in the Td Training Module theoretical and methodological foundations as well as methods for transdisciplinary research were introduced. Furthermore, transdisciplinary case study designs were developed that addressed topics of the professional practice of the participants. Thus, participants were able to gain a theoretical understanding by lessons and practical experiences through working in inter- and transdisciplinary teams. Results of the case study designs were presented in an open plenary session at UdelaR on the last day.

First Td Summer School in Spanish

At Leuphana University Lueneburg the English-speaking international Td Summer School takes place every year since 2012. The Summer School in Montevideo was a successful start for ‘travelling’ with the Spanish-speaking Td_Escuela de Verano format to several South-American countries. The Td_Escuela de Verano 2017 will be held in Chile. For the organizers, the intercultural perspectives on transdisciplinarity generated valuable insights for analyzing discourses, political and economic contexts in which transdisciplinary research takes place and thus will contribute to a base on which to explore and develop alternative transformative politics and transdisciplinary methodologies.

Seminar in Montevideo: Inter- and Transdisciplinarity in Action

Espacio Interdisciplinario, Universidad de la República, Montevideo, Uruguay
March 3rd – 4th, 2016

More than 60 participants, coming from diverse backgrounds of social psychology, sociology, natural science etc. attended the seminar, presented by Ulli Vilsmaier and Bianca Vienni at the Espacio Interdisciplinario of the Universidad de la República, Montevideo, Uruguay.
The seminar aimed at

  • Groups or projects that are still in a preliminary stage of interdisciplinary research. This workshop offers an opportunity to reflect on its framework of research, its plan and proposed methodologies.
  • Selecting knowledge of the methodologies and methods of inter- and transdisciplinary research (for example, Case-based Mutual Learning Sessions; Methods for Boundary Work; Interface Design).
  • Exchange, reflection and critical discussion of different views, visions and understandings of inter- and transdisciplinarity in Europe and Uruguay, South-American context.

In this context Ulli Vilsmaier and Esther Meyer presented cases of transdisciplinary Sustainability Science as one strand and perspective of transdisciplinarity taught at Leuphana University Lüneburg and critically explored in the CCP project.
Presenting these concrete methodologies of the German/ European context stimulated enormously fruitful discussions and immediate reactions, that came to happen during the presentations, in several workshop-formats and interviews during the breaks, rising questions and concerns, such as the danger of the adaption of theories and practices of liberation in hegemonic development discourses.
These insights affirm hypotheses for further discourse analytical research in CCP.

The seminar promises further valuable insights from the exchange during the week-long transdisciplinary Summer School in Montevideo, organized by the Espacio Interdisciplinario and the Center for Methods, Leuphana, starting at March, 6th, attended by participants from several South-American countries.
